The team at SD Strategies has been developing engaging online ESG training courses for more than 10 years. Here are some insights for companies looking to source and deliver online training:

  1. Beware of cheap PowerPoint presentations with AI voice-over masquerading as eLearning. Effective and engaging online courses include interactivity, multimedia, quizzes and knowledge checks, professional voice over and a depth of factual and up-to-date information.

  2. Link your training courses to external websites and resources so learners can explore topics widely and understand the bigger picture.

  3. Don't forget to train your priority and potentially highest risk suppliers and other stakeholders. They are an essential part of a successful and inclusive risk management or ESG program. Offering training to your suppliers is a great way to engage and empower them to address material ESG issues and risks.

  4. Be prepared for challenges associated with deploying externally sourced online training courses, especially when using external Learning Management Systems (LMS) and ensure your training provider is technically competent to help solve IT problems quickly and efficiently.  Make sure learners are provided with help desk support (particularly if they aren’t particularly computer literate) and understand cybersecurity, firewalls and limited bandwidth issues.

  5. Ensure cultural factors associated with international learners or First Nations users are considered and that courses are updated with changes to legislation, statistics or other parameters. Be sure the system you use is capable of tracking and monitoring course completions and providing up-to-date training reports.
